A Good Fence Contractor Adds Value
Your house and the property it sits on, is likely the largest and most significant investment you will make. A new fence can increase its value and protect its perimeter. In the world we live in it’s important to be shrewd as there are construction companies out there that are lacking in experience, skill, professionalism, and integrity. Fence material costs have recently increased significantly, therefore it has become even more important to hire a company that uses and installs material properly, wastes little, and guarantees their work. Hiring a pro comes with a cost, but a worthwhile sacrifice to ensure you get a fence that will last decades. (read – Why Lumber And Plywood Prices Are So High?)
4 Things to Look For
How do you know that you found the right contractor? What are some important qualities of a good fence contractor? This post will provide you with 4 things to look for. A decent contractor should posses all 4 of the following traits.
First – Reliable and Skilled
First and foremost, is the company and its workers reliable and skilled. To have confidence in the contactor you choose, you will need to do some research and get to know them. Today that isn’t as difficult as you may think. Use Google and search the name of the company. The company website can tell you much about them. Look for a portfolio of the work they have done. If their portfolio is filled with stock photo’s (too good to be true) that should be a red flag. Google reviews offers a clear picture of a company’s abilities. Look for a company with a good rating 4-5 stars or other well known awards. (i.e. Readers Choice Award)
Second – Value
Second, you should compare prices. Get at least 3 quotes. A good contractor will usually not be the cheapest price; however, they will ultimately provide the best value. Take time to examine each quote carefully and take note of all that’s included. For example, does the quote include removal of waste after the job is completed. Keep in mind that good contractors hire good carpenters, none of which work for the benefit of the public, so expect to pay for good quality workmanship.
Third – Professionalism
The third thing to look for is professionalism. Do they have the skills and qualifications to build a strong fence that also looks great? You may not get to meet the workers who will be building your fence until the day they begin. However, you can make judgments based on the representative that prices the job. Is their vehicle indicative of a company that does well? Is the representative dressed decently, do they show you respect and are they courteous? Do they listen to you? Often, the level of professionalism displayed by the salesperson reflects the workers who will do the work.
Forth – Safey & Insurance
Finally, make sure the company you choose has insurance and adheres to government safety policies. They should have this clearly mandated on their website. Why is it important? If there are any issues with their work or damage to your property, liability insurance can compensate you for these situations. It also helps if a worker is injured on your property and tries to hold you responsible.
